The Giving Tree

Author: Shel Silverstein

Year: 1986

Type: fantasy

Personal Reflection:

I was astonished by this book. On one hand, the tree could be everyone around us who treated us like we were their treasure. But they may be tired, for they sacrificed so much for us such as our parents. On the other hand, it seemed that we were still childish because we couldn’t find out who devoted themselves deeply to doing something for us. This book reminded us of cherishing every person around us, or we must regret. Because they must be painful in their mind when we hurt them carelessly.

We are very happy because almost everybody has giving trees. The giving tree looked like our parents. Whether we are happy, sad and angry or not, our parents always by our sides. They give the best thing to us. They care about us and love us. We look like the boy. Keep being given, and we always receive. But we seldom appreciate them. Not until we lose do we always know their values. In my opinion, we must learn how to requite their giving and give our loves to them. Then they just know we love them very much as well.

Analysis:

The pictures are very simple and easy. However, it brings the deep emotion for us. There are a lot of blank spaces in this book. In my opinion, the author wanted us to focus on those simple pictures and experience the deep meaning in it. Although there are only black and white colors, we can still feel the author’s feelings. It was emotional and thankful. Eventually, I really love the main character, the giving tree but hate the boy. I imagined the giving tree was my important people. They gave me their selfless love. I also imagined I was the boy and I felt a sense of hatred. How can I hurt those valuable people? Because of this book, I learned a vital lesson. When others give you something, you should give back sincerely.
