The Frog Prince Continued

Author: Steve Johnson / Jon Scieszka

Year: 1991

Type: modern fairytale

Personal Reflection:

Most of the fairy tales end up with “They lived happily ever after.” In reality, it seems that it is not truthful to live happily in all of our rest lives. I think “The Frog Prince Continued” wants to reveal it to us.

At first, I don’t like the Prince because he was so lazy and did nothing in his life. He just felt boring and unhappy every day. However, he took actions for finding their happiness backreturning to a frog. It is interesting that the main character wanted to become his ugly appearance. No one likes to go back to his nightmare. The Prince tried to catch his happy life back, so he was willing to sacrifice himself. I really can say the Princess is so lucky to have this husband.

I really like the plots when he encountered the three Witches and the Fairy Godmother. The reason is that all of them related to other famous fairy tales which are Sleeping Beauty, Snow white, Hansel and Gretel, and Cinderella. It just liked the Prince jumped into the other worlds. It stimulates me to recall my ecstatic childhood memory. In this part, I suggest adults can imply their children to recall the stories they may have read. It can add interactions between them.

What I learned from this book is to change the situation we don’t like. A lot of people don’t enjoy their lives but they also don’t go to change. They just want to be in their comfort zone like the Prince in the beginning. We have to stand up and go for our better lives. Just like the Prince and the Princess in the end who turn into the frogs and live happily ever after.

Analysis:

In the story, there are four climaxes when the main character encountered the four antagonists. It seems interesting that the Fairy Godmother became the evil one who in Cinderella was a good person. The tone is so exciting when the Prince visited them. Besides, I think the style of the pictures is a little ironic possibly because it reveals the truth in reality. If so, it matches well and I really feel I am in reality as I read it.

The ending is good because the Prince got his goal to turn into the frog. However, in my opinion, the plot goes to fast. I was astonished that both of them became frogs suddenly. I can’t follow the ending and keep thinking why it came to be here.

In conclusion, I think the story is funny and creative. If you are tired of reading “They lived happily ever after,” maybe you can change to read “They hopped off happily ever after.”
